KOLKATA: On the eve of independence day an ‘ADDA’ (homely discussion) was arranged by Bangla Worldwide at a historical mansion of Sir Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay in Bhowanipore in South Kolkata in presence of luminaries of different fields.

The eminent personalities like litterateur Buddhadev Guha, Justice Chittotosh Mookerjee, Historian Hosenur Rahaman, former SBI chairman Dhrubanarayan Ghosh, Historian Rina Bhaduri, Surgeon Dipak Ghosh, Physician Sukumar Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Sujit Kar Purkayastha, eminent barrister Anindya Mitra, Prof. Krishnangshu Roy, Samaresh Bandyopadhyay, Asok Gangopadhyay, Educationist Sukanta Chowdhury, Prof. Ashok Thakur, Physician Bhaskar Dasgupta from England, Mr. Taranjit Singh, MD of JIS Group and others. Saktibikash Roy of Srihatta Samiti and Gopinath Ghosh of Sutanati Parishad with his students. All of them had made their presence by active participation by sharing their experience as a Bengali before and after independence.

The program was conducted by eminent lawyer and former Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.

At the very beginning, Bhattacharya requested Justice Chittotosh Mukhpadhyay to reminiscent of what happened 72 years back when India became independent on August 15.

Through Justice Mukhpadhyay’s reminiscent, the entire picture became quite lively. He told about the hoisting of the tri-color flag on August 15, 1947.

He remembered his experiences of seeing personalities like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and also singing Vande Mataram of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Jana Gana mana of Rabindra Nath Tagore by Sucheta Kripalani. He mentioned about the unparallel contribution of Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Educationist Pabitra Sarkar told about his experience of seeing the hoisting of Pakistani national flag in his village. Initially, they were not willing to leave. He was giving a description with personal touch mixed with pangs of leaving the village which was quite dear to him. He also gave a harrowing description of excesses in the name of ‘NAKA’ checking. Surgeon Dipak Ghosh of Chattogram was giving descriptions of his experiences in a very lucid language that how Bengal was divided just through some dotted lines. He also told about an amazing announcement by All India Radio (AIR) broadcaster Bibhuti Das, “I am Bibhuti Das. Now it is 12 midnight. India becomes independent.”

Litterateur Buddhadev Guha gave a wonderful description of the heroic fight of the Bengalis. He told one of his uncles was a freedom fighter who also took part in armed struggle. He had to maintain a beard to throw dust in the eyes of the British. However, even after independence, he did not shave because he felt that they did not fight for this freedom which has divided Bengal. He boldly told he would shave when barbed wires between the two countries would not remain. “But my uncle could never shave,” lamented Guha. During discussions, eminent lawyer Anindya Mitra said that they were residing near a border area and had seen a number of gory incidents but now he wants no repetition of such incidents. “I want to forget such incidents as Bengalis have to survive.”

Another barrister Asok Gangopadhyay said that there was a pause after Rammohan Roy, Vidyasagar, Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Subhas Chandra Bose, however, it was continued by Satyajit Ray, Pandit Ravi Sankar, and other luminaries. “We are to increase the number and then Bengalis will be more and more encouraged to restore its former glory.”

Gopinath Ghosh in his short speech pointed out that to the Bengali-attire like ‘DHOTI’ and ‘PUNJABI’ are going to the oblivion and even some of them feel shy to speak in Bengali. “If this trend continues, the Bengalis will be drifting away from their roots,” he said.

Eminent physician Bhaskar Dasgupta, residing in London emphasized on delivering the sweetness of Bengali language to the third and fourth generation.

Of course, Justice Samaresh Bandyopadhyay was quite emphatic. He said, “The form may change but Bengalis will never die, they will always remain with their attitude.”

Mr. Taranjit Singh, spoke in Bengali and told us that he has integrated himself with Bengali Culture and Heritage and was very happy to be a participant in this ADDA.

Probably the theme of the 'ADDA' was pronounced by the participants through their experiences.
