A Conjugal Conversation – দাম্পত্যআলাপ - BuddhadebBosu (part-5)

Aunt told me, ‘Now you make Sushi understand.’

I fell from the sky. ‘Oh dear! How could I make her understand?’

‘If you tell her that will be enough. You know how much she is devoted to you.’

Turning red, I said, ‘What nonsense ….’

But I was concerned. I would be the one most embarrassed if after going ahead so far, the deal broke. What was Sushi thinking?

I found her by the window at the corner room of the first floor. I told her – perhaps that was the first time I spoke directly to her, ‘The arrangements have gone so much ahead. Will you now embarrass everybody?’

She raised her eyes once. Then she lowered her head and softly asked, ‘What about me?’

‘Do you have a doubt in your mind?’

Her maiden cheek turned crimson. She twisted the end of her saree around her finger and then slowly unfurled it.

I asked again, ‘Would you reconsider once more?’

‘Are you asking me?’

I was surprised by her question. – ‘Your mother, your sister – everyone is wishing – there Sukumar is awaiting you’ – I couldn’t complete the sentence. Suddenly it sounded awkward in my own ears.

‘I know all that. But are you asking as well?’

While trying to smile, I said, ‘Of course, I must.’

‘Why? You feel obliged to your friend?’

‘Not exactly for that. What’s good for you…’

‘Good for me!’ Saying just those words, Sushama suddenly turned around and without giving me time to say anything more, left the room slowly.

Soon the wedding day arrived. The house was full of guests and cacophony. Soon that day of the monsoon month sprinted into the evening. I was roaming around busiy. Not that much work was getting done by me properly but my intentions were apparent. It was time for the wedding. The groom had arrived. Looking for my aunt for something, I came over to that corner room of the first floor. A group of ladies were sitting around Sushi. She was wearing a pink Benarasi saree, sandalwood designs on her face, her feet painted in red. She was sitting on the mattress with her chin resting on her knees. Her head lowered. She looked beautiful. Perhaps I looked on a little longer.

Having seen me, her mother excitedly said, ‘Come in my dear. It is all because of you – I will never forget. Sushi touch Suman’s feet.’

By suddenly being put on a pedestal, I was too stunned to run away. Sushi having touched my feet, stood up. I saw her eyes were red. I heard girls cry on wedding eves. Possibly she too was crying. Still she looked exquisite.

For a while, her eyes were fixed on my face. Then she almost inaudibly said, ‘This what you had in your mind.’

I couldn’t stay there any longer. Lowering my head I left like a culprit. Suddenly on that festive evening, an unbound sorrow descended upon me.”

“Then?”

“There’s no then after that. That’s the end.”

“You never met Sushama afterwards?”

“After the various ceremonies, Sukumar left with his bride for Khulna. Over the last eight years, he had been all over – Bagerhat, Meherpur, Noakhali. Uncle too suddenly took a job in Delhi and left. I too got stuck with my work, duties of married life.”

“Not even once you met her?”

“Not even once. Sukumar wrote several times to go over. I too thought of going sometime. But like many wishes, this too was never fulfilled. Once along with her husband, Sushama also wrote a long letter. I didn’t know how to respond to that ecstatic joyous letter. They were really happy.”

“I am thinking why I never got to meet Sushama. It would have been nice. Why didn’t you ever asked them to come?”

“Don’t you know how easily we forget? Again we don’t forget. How I remembered everything as I opened the newspaper today.”

“Please don’t mind, but you were really silly.”

“I still am. Only once in the middle I did something clever.”

“What was that?”

“To marry you.”
