Impact of Covid-19 on 2020 US Election

11 December, 2020 12:35:00 PM

Mr. Mrinal Chaudhuri from Houston, USA; former President of  NABC & presently President of March Together, a Houston based non-profit organization and a Trustee of Houston Durgabari Society and an active member of Houston based Prabashbandhu Sahitya Sabha.

Status of Project WARP Speed as presented in the  BWW webinar dated Dec 2, 2020:

    1. Defeat of Donald Trump, which would have unlikely to happen without Covid-19.

    2. Introduction and substantial increase in number of votes of introducing enhanced and efficient mailing system which was strongly opposed by President  Trump
    3. As a result, substantial increase in voter participation. In 2016, voter participation was 135.7 million, where as it is 157.8 million in 2020- an increase   of 22 million votes which is 16% Increase.

   4. Introduction of much fair voting system specially because of Trump's threat of voting fraud from Democratic side from the very beginning. In fact, there   was not a single case where voting fraud was detected.

  5. Although not related to Covid-19 impact, because of awareness and advanced alert, foreign influence on 2020 USA election is being minimized.

  6. Possibility of elimination of Electoral College voting for selection of President, which was introduced long time ago for the reason which is much less relevant   now -a-day. Time has come for elimination of Electoral College voting for selection of US President.

Project WARP speed

1. The project was introduced by Donald Trump/US government to inoculate 300 million Americans with safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines with warp speed (a term for quickest time for correct action) with   the initial doses by January 2021. As part of broader strategy, Warp Speed is to accelerate the development manufacturing, and distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics (collectively   known as countermeasures).

2. ows (Operation Warp Speed) is a partnership of Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and Department of Defense (DoD).

3. Attached herewith on status of world wise vaccine development (WHO Report). Based on the Report and OWS activities, it is expected that first phase of Covid-19 vaccine development is expected to accomplish by end of December, 2020/beginning of 2021. Obviously, further development and enhancement will be on-going. The front runner in vaccine development is BioNTech/Pfizer followed by Moderma/NIAID and several others from UK, China etc.

4. One of the challenging issues is storing the leading Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer which needs to be stored at -80 degree C which needs ultra-cold freezers to store which is not affordable for many rural hospitals.

5. Another front runner for Covid-19 vaccine development, Moderna/NAIID requires storing temperature of -20 degree C. which is relative easy and cheap to store but still needs time to fully developed.

6. Large urban hospitals across the US. are rushing to buy expensive ultra-cold freezers to store what's likely to be the first approved Covid-19 vaccine. But most rural hospitals cannot afford these high-end units, meaning health workers and residents in those communities may have difficulty getting the shots. CDC has advised state health departments against purchasing ultra cold freezers, which cost $10,000 to $15,000 each saying other vaccines with less demanding storage requirements will be available soon.

7. Another front runner in vaccine development, Johnson & Johnson temporarily halted for developing the vaccine due to some internal issue; however according to a reliable source, they are resuming the development aiming to complete the Phase Ill study.

Situation in India
1. According to a reliable source, India would need about 1.7 bn Covid-19 vaccine doses Covid to vaccinate a majority of its adult population. The target right now to administer 500 mn dose by July 2021. Data shows that India has ample manufacturing capacity (about 2.5 bn doses) that would be sufficient to meet both domestic and export demand, however, analysts point out that cold chain infrastructure is a key bottleneck.

2. For the cold chain infrastructure, India's current immunization program handles around 600 mn doses and the private sector has a capacity of about 250-300 mn doses. With this, the potential vaccinations reach 550-600 mn doses annually. Add to this manpower required to give the jab would be around 100,000 people. On this basis, mass inoculation of India's population is likely to be achieved only by end of 2023 according to the analyst’s feet.

3. Syringe and vial makers are already in ramp up mode and India is unlikely to face any supply constrain at least in the first half of 2021.

4. In the cold chain, although there is bottleneck in production which can be overcome but the major issue is the transportation keeping in such cold condition due to lack of infrastructure. The organized sector does not have reach into the hinterlands and the government is likely to use existing fruit and vegetable cold storage and the Universal Immunization Program network to serve these areas.
