ব্যাথা আমাদের শত্রু নয়, বন্ধু। এটা আসলে কোনও রোগ নয়। কোনও অসুখের আভাসমাত্র। সল্টলেকের পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় সাংস্কৃতিক কেন্দ্রে অনুষ্ঠিত প্রথম আন্তর্জাতিক বাঙালি সম্মেলনে স্বাস্থ্য বিষয়ক আলোচনার অন্যতম বিষয় "ব্যাথা" নিয়ে এ ভাবেই আলোচনা শুরু করলেন অনাবাসী বাঙালি চিকিৎসক ভাস্কর দাসগুপ্ত। তিনি এসেছিলেন লণ্ডন থেকে। আলোচনাটি পরিচালনা করেন ডাঃ সুকুমার মুখার্জী।

বিশ্বজুড়ে বাঙালী ডাক্তাররা বিশেষ দক্ষতা ও যোগ্যতার সঙ্গে কাজ করছেন। ব্রিটেন বা মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র বা কলকাতা-ঢাকা সর্বত্র তাঁরা সুনামের সঙ্গে দাপিয়ে কাজ করছেন। কিন্তু বাঙালী সমাজে বা নিজের দেশে তাঁদের প্রাপ্য স্বীকৃতি তাঁরা পাচ্ছেন না।

কলকাতায় এখন বিশ্বমানের শল্য চিকিৎসা হয়। ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে রোবটও। রোবট ব্যবহার হয় তো এখনও ততো ব্যাপক ভাবে হচ্ছে না। তবে হচ্ছে। যে সব হাসপাতালে আধুনিকতম পরিকাঠামো রয়েছে তেমন কিছু হাসপাতালে রোবট ব্যবহার হচ্ছে মাত্র। সর্বত্র নয়।
